Smokychimp’s Website

This site began as a way to track the most memorable and striking art exhibitions I’ve seen in New York, starting around 2010. At the time, I was tracking several activities with blogs, in different disciplines – photography, ceramics, keeping track of books I had read. Having five or six blogs wasn’t that uncommon for people back then, since after all WordPress was free.

At the time, the web was rich with people doing the same thing. I was inspired by some great blogs like Arthag, who still perseveres although a lot of them have died off over time.

As someone directly and indirectly in the art world (in addition to running the Platform Gallery on the Lower East Side, I have been on the Board of Artist’s Equity, and have designed a number of galleries and arts foundations) this project has had no direct benefit for me professionally, just personally. I use this as a way to remember the art I’ve seen that was the most interesting and to my mind worthy of further thought and study later. Each entry is a springboard for me to recollect, dig further, see what the artists are up to now.
